What to expect on your first visit
We are so glad you’ve chosen us to be your oral health care team. Here we’ll describe what you can expect on your first visit.
If you’re due for check-up radiographs, we’ll take the necessary diagnostic images, which may be a full series (18-20 images), bitewings (2-4 images) or a combination of bitewings and single films of specific teeth, depending on your individual needs. A full series of x-rays takes approximately 20 minutes and may be taken in our vintage dental chair from 1900! (Don’t worry, only the chair, not the x-ray unit itself is that old).
The exam will last approximately forty minutes, depending on your: treatment history, needs, and questions. Before the initial exam, we ask that every patient complete our new patient paperwork. The doctor will review this information with you during your exam. Oral health is part of overall health, which is why these questionnaires are so important to us. Make sure to list all of your medications, including over the counter medicines, vitamins and supplements. Many medications, prescription or otherwise, may alter the tissues in your mouth, (for example, some medications can decrease saliva production), so it’s helpful for us to know this as we go through the exam.
After understanding your treatment goals, an intra-oral and extra-oral exam will be completed. Dentists are well versed in head and neck anatomy, which is why we do an extra-oral exam in addition to looking inside your mouth. The exam will also take note of any existing fillings, crowns and bridges, TMJ sounds and include a cavity-risk assessment and a periodontal (gum) evaluation. If you have concerns about the function or esthetics of your teeth, this is the best time to bring those up! Photos, molds and models of your teeth may be taken for diagnostic purposes so the doctor can further evaluate your teeth and bite after you leave our office.
At the end of your exam, the doctor will review with you how healthy your teeth and gums are. You will be given another appointment to see one of our talented hygienists at a later date. Typically, we do not do the cleanings the same day as your new patient exam, but we make every effort to schedule one just as soon after your exam as we can.
We accept all PPO insurance plans.
More specifically, we accept all PPO insurance plans as an out-of-network provider. We do not participate in any HMO plans (e.g. DeltaCare USA), nor do we accept Denti-Cal.
If you have any questions about your coverage, please contact our office. We will do our best to help you understand your insurance benefits. If you would like pre-authorization for upcoming treatment, we will submit a claim on your behalf. Please understand that we can only provide estimates for insurance coverage, even with a pre-authorization from your carrier.
Please bring your current insurance card to your first visit.
Cancellation / Reschedule policy
Kindly give us notice 2 full business days prior to your appointment if you need to cancel or reschedule. This allows us to get someone else into the office who is waiting to be seen. We truly appreciate it!
