Happy New Year!

Dear patients,
I’m excited to be back at our dental practice after taking maternity leave. I want to thank Dr. Gary Tong for his clinical expertise in treating all of you in my absence.

In addition to returning to private practice, I am also resuming my role at the University of the Pacific. After teaching first year students in the simulation clinic for three years, I switched gears in 2016 and now teach a seminar for senior students on the Virtual Dental Home. The University of the Pacific has developed the premier community and mobile dentistry program in the country, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. By sending dental professionals into the community to collect patient information and to begin treating dental disease, we reduce the burden on those that have the most difficulty making the trip into a physical dental office. This is an area of work that I’m particularly passionate about. If you’d like to learn more about this aspect of dentistry, ask me next time you’re in the office, check out www.virtualdentalhome.org or send me an email at [email protected]

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Maternity Leave and Dr. Gary Tong

Dear patients,

It has been such a pleasure to get to know you over the last six months. As part of the transition between Dr. Eckhard and myself, the practice has recently begun using electronic dental records and digital radiographs (x-rays). I cannot thank my team enough for their enthusiasm, open-mindedness and dedication to this process. Thank you in advance for bearing with us as we navigate this hybrid paper-electronic system upgrade!

Many of you already know that I had my second daughter in August and am taking maternity leave through the end of the year. In my absence, Dr. Gary Tong will be seeing patients in our practice. Dr. Tong and I share a similar practice philosophy, which is of the utmost importance to me. It was vital that Dr. Eckhard and I shared a vision of the kind of care we provide as he turned the practice over to me, and I feel confident that Dr. Tong will also treat you with the quality of dentistry that you have become accustomed to in our practice.

Born and raised in New York, Dr. Tong graduated from Haverford College in Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He then went to work in the research field on HIV Salivary diagnostics. After research he went on to complete a Masters of Science in Recombinant DNA technology at New York University, followed by his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from New York University College of Dentistry.

After completing his DDS degree, Dr. Tong moved to Redding, California for a residency year of Advanced Education in General Dentistry. His experience in Redding and working in private offices in New York has given Dr. Tong an enjoyment for caring for and treating patients of all ages. He is focused on providing patients with the best experience possible and treating everyone with respect and integrity.

He is Invisalign certified and an active member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, and New York State Dental Association. In his off time, he enjoys running, movies, museums and hiking. He is happy to be back in California and treating patients in our welcoming Berkeley community.

It has been a big year of transition both professionally and personally, to say the least. Thank you for your continued support of our dental practice!

As always, if you have any questions or feedback, you can email me directly at [email protected]

Best wishes,
Lauren Yasuda Rainey, DDS

Hello and Welcome!

Dear patients,

I am delighted to begin working with you over the coming weeks. It has been a pleasure getting to know Dr. Eckhard during the last several months, and our aim is to make this transition as smooth as possible for you, our patients!

A bit about myself – I have lived with my family in Berkeley for the last three years. In my free time, I enjoy playing and building Japanese drums, baking, and hiking in Tilden Park. Every year I look forward to a weekend getaway with my Wellesley College classmates. We’ve been to eight different US cities in as many years and are taking recommendations for our 2016 trip! Before Berkeley, my husband and I have also lived in Southern Japan, San Francisco and Cambridge, MA.

I hold professional memberships with the American Dental Association and the California Dental Association. Currently, I serve on the board of the Berkeley Dental Society. I am Invisalign certified and love using photos to supplement conversations about oral health. My practice philosophy highlights oral health as an integral part of overall health. In addition to private practice, I teach first-year dental students in their simulation clinic at the University of the Pacific.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] before your next visit if you have any questions about my background or your treatment needs.

I look forward to providing your care now and in the future!

All the best,

Lauren Yasuda Rainey, DDS
